Why Mental Resets are Great for Every Office Worker

Do you ever come home from work stressed and find that your glass of wine or scotch at the end of the day isn’t quite cutting it? In our modern high-tech and fast-paced world, a lot is demanded of office workers, making it difficult to ever feel at peace. We look at screens too much, sleep too little, and rarely take time to focus on ourselves. However, it’s time to break that cycle: here’s why mental resets are a requirement for every office worker.

So What is a Mental Reset?

To start: let’s define mental reset. A mental reset is anything that allows you to take some time for yourself to regain a sense of mental equilibrium and stability. What this looks like changes from person to person, but common examples include meditation, reading, and exercise.

Importantly, a mental reset is NOT something you are doing for work. It is an activity that gets you away from work and allows you to relax. In most cases, mental resets take place at home or in nature, but some can even be done at work!

Benefits of a Mental Reset

1. Stress Reduction

When we overwork ourselves, our stress levels only go up. It is easy to think that if we only work harder, we will achieve success. However, really, we just end up overloading our bodies and our minds, while constantly feeling stress and anxiety.

A mental reset combats this feeling of being constantly overwhelmed. A guided meditation session or a walk in nature – both excellent mental resets – are great at reducing stress.

2. Productivity Increases

Not only do mental resets make us feel better, they are also shown to increase overall productivity. Although there are times when hard work is necessary, we also must make space to give our brains and bodies a break. If we do so, we can actually get more work done than we would have otherwise.

3. Time for Self-Reflection

When we spend all day working or with our families, it is difficult to take time out to think about ourselves. However, many types of mental resets allow us to do just that. Journaling is a great example of this type of activity, and it is something that is easy to implement at home or in the workplace.

When we self-reflect, we get a chance to think about our own wants, needs, and desires, rather than those of our employer. Often, we may find things aren’t going the way we want or, alternatively, that things are better than we thought. Both are valuable insights, but they are things we don’t think about unless we take the time to do so.

You Have to Make Your Own Time

Unfortunately, many workplaces think of mental resets as counterintuitive and therefore they don’t work mental reset time into the schedule. This means you must make time for yourself. It could be in the morning, on your lunch break, or even over the weekend. The exact time frame doesn’t matter but you want to try to be consistent. If you do, your body, mind, and maybe even your boss, will thank you.
