Everyone is always looking for ways to reduce stress. A quick google search will tell you that the best ways to do so are by exercising, eating right, and getting a good night’s sleep. Of course, these are all things you should do, but today we’re thinking a bit more outside the box. Here are 6 less common ways to reduce stress which you can do to help you maintain your work-life balance.
1. Spend Time with Animals
Who wouldn’t love taking some time out of their day to be with an animal? Whether it’s walking your dog or petting your cat, spending time with animals is actually a proven way to reduce stress. Studies show that when humans spend time with animals they like, their cortisol levels decrease. Cortisol is one of our stress hormones so when we lower the amount that gets released, we feel less stressed and less anxious.
Of course, not everyone has time for a pet. Luckily, there are other great ways to spend quality time with animals.
2. Go to a Comedy Show
Ever hear that “laughter is the best medicine?” Well, that might be a slight exaggeration, but it is great for stress relief! Although it’s not something most people will make a habit, going to a comedy show and laughing floods your brain with endorphins and therefore reduces your stress levels.
Of course, you can also stay home and watch your favorite comedy movie or sit-com if that’s more your speed. However, comedy clubs, movie theatres, and other similar venues are great because studies show that people are much more likely to laugh when they are in groups. More people = more laughter = less stress.
3. Play a Board Game
Board games are another great communal activity, and they are an easy thing to squeeze in during a lunch break or at the end of the day. Board games encourage friendly competition and mental stimulation both of which help us to relieve stress and anxiety.
Also, if you would prefer a solo activity, puzzles and puzzle games work the same way. Even games on our phones are effective, although this might be something to avoid if you are someone who spends too much time looking at screens already.
4. Chew Gum
This one sounds odd, but in the last two decades, a number of studies have shown that chewing gum can increase your focus while lowering your stress level. It’s a great habit to form because it is (usually) easy to implement at work and it is quite inexpensive. Also, chewing sugarless gum has added benefits including fresh breath and strengthen enamel.
5. Practice Good Posture
Like chewing gum, this one is great because it doesn’t take any extra time out of your day. Whether you’re at work, at home or in your car, do your best to practice good posture. There are many benefits of sitting up straight including pain relief and improved digestion. Most importantly, good posture is linked to a boost in mood and confidence, and a decrease in stress and anxiety.
6. Drink Orange Juice
Start your day off right with a glass of OJ for breakfast and you won’t regret it. Foods and drinks that are high in vitamin C are shown to reduce cortisol levels and there are few things higher in vitamin C than orange juice.
Of course, you don’t want to overdo it. Juices are typically high in sugar content which is something to be mindful of. That said, a glass of orange juice with breakfast is a great way to start off the day and get those cortisol levels down.
