5 Things to Put on Your New York Bucket List

New York is one of the most diverse states in the nation, meaning there are an incredible number of things to do. Whether you prefer city life, the great outdoors, or something in between, New York state has it all. However, to avoid getting overwhelmed, we’ve created a New York bucket list, so you know where to start when looking for things to do in NY.

New York Bucket List #1: Visit the Adirondack Mountains

This is a must for anyone who loves the outdoors. The Adirondacks are stunningly beautiful, and the region offers a wide variety of experiences to fit different lifestyles.

If you love to hike, check out the Adirondack High Peaks. In total, there are 46 of them and the hikes scale from moderately difficult to quite hard. If you’re an expert, we would recommend climbing Mt. Marcy, Algonquin Peak, or Whiteface Mountain (which is also a great skiing spot). All three of these mountains offer a great challenge and amazing views. Also, though you will need to start early, each of these hikes can be done in one day. For beginners, Porter Mountain or Cascade Mountain might be more suitable. The hikes are much less strenuous, and the views are no less beautiful.

If you are looking for a place to relax in between all this mountain climbing, we would highly recommend staying in Lake Placid. Not only is Lake Placid incredibly gorgeous, but it also has a rich history as it was home to the Winter Olympics in 1932 and in 1980. Also, if you want to plan a winter trip, Lake Placid is hosting the Winter Olympics again in 2023!

If you want to learn more, we recommend checking out this website which will tell you all you need to know about the region. Finally, if you are a first-time hiker, be sure to read up on what to bring and what to expect before you go. No one – even seasoned professionals – should start a long hike without the proper resources!

New York Bucket List #2: Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

When people visit New York City, they always make sure to hit the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and the Empire State Building. Don’t get us wrong, you definitely should see those as well, but don’t forget about all of the great museums in NYC! There are a number of must-sees including the Museum of Natural History, the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. However, if you have to pick just one, we highly recommend the Museum of Modern Art, also known as MoMA.

The MoMA is home to some of the most famous artworks in the world including Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Salvador Dalí’s The Persistence of Memory, and Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Can. Additionally, you can find works by Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Jackson Pollock, and Marcel Duchamp, all of which are permanently on display.

Furthermore, the MoMA regularly features limited time exhibits by great artists from around the world. If you would like to learn more about what is currently on display, visit this page on their website.

New York Bucket List #3: Finger Lakes Wineries

If you are a lover of wine, the Finger Lakes Region of New York is the place to be. Over 100 wineries can be found across the Finger Lakes, all of which boast great wine and food.

Of course, we have to narrow it down a little bit, so here are two favorites:

  • Thirsty Owl Wine Company: Thirsty Owl has been around for roughly two decades and their wines can be found all throughout New York State. Along with their delectable wine selection, they also house the Thirsty Owl Bistro which is a great a spot for lunch.
  • Anyela’s Vineyards: Anyela’s Vineyards is found up on a hill overlooking Skaneateles Lake, so you get a gorgeous view along with your wine. Like many of the local wineries, Anyela’s offers wine tastings, so you get to try their collection of reds, whites, and rosés before you buy them.

New York Bucket List #4: New York State Fair

This is more of a limited-time only event, but the New York State Fair is worth the trip. Held annually in Syracuse, the New York State Fair starts in late August and goes until early September.

Along with your typical fair rides and food, the New York State Fair features a giant butter sculpture (which is usually several hundred pounds), pig races, street performances, and dozens of concerts (many of which are free!). Last year alone, over 50 concerts were held including performances by Noah Cyrus, Nas, The Beach Boys, and Nelly.

Unlike some of the other entries on this list, the New York State Fair is a great place for families, and it is truly deserving of its spot on your New York Bucket List. For more information, be sure to check out their website. As it gets closer to August, more and more shows and exhibits will be announced.
